“Tcl’s most important role on the Web is in server-side generation of dynamic content. This is roughly the job Perl and Active Server Pages (ASP) tend to dominate.”

Tcl has approximately the same technical capability as other server-side languages, including Perl, Java, C++, and JavaScript. While several myths such as ‘Only Perl can do CGI’ (Common Gateway Interface) or ‘PHP is Apache’s scripting language’ are still widely believed and still circulated among coders everwhere, they are false. Tcl is equally suitable.

“How does a development team choose one language for CGI over another? Most choice factors are non-technical. For example, many organizations may simply have policies that mandate Java, while sometimes a local college provides a ready source of training in a particular language. There was a time when Perl was considerably faster than Tcl for certain operations, but this is no longer the case.”
