WebGain Sells Java Tools

WebGain announced significant cuts in staffing and infrastructure and sold its TopLink data integration product. WebGain says that its primary objective is the sale of the company’s product lines and all of its other assets, consistent with its plan to maximize returns to its creditors and shareholders. In the interim, the company intends to provide support and service for most WebGain products through its own resources, or through third parties, and to facilitate customer transition to parties who have acquired, or will acquire, WebGain assets.

WebGain’s TopLink, a Java to database integration product that includes object-relational mapping capabilities, has been acquired by Oracle Corporation. WebGain cited rapidly changing market conditions, the absence of a recovery in IT spending, and a growing number of competitors in a crowded market as leading factors in the decision to leave the tools market. Also, a factor may have been the success of open-source Java tools, including those from the Apache Software Foundation.
