Vircom and The Messaging Architects Wednesday announced that they had partnered to offer a new native GroupWise anti-spam solution called GWGuardian. Available immediately, GWGuardian incorporates Vircom’s Sieve-based anti-spam technology, Automated Intelligent Content Filtering, and multilayered spam attack safeguards.
Available immediately, GWGuardian incorporates Vircom’s Sieve-based anti-spam technology, Automated Intelligent Content Filtering (AICF), and multilayered spam attack safeguards. It is packaged as a Fire & Forget, GWIA-level gateway, and is designed specifically for GroupWise enterprise clients.
According to the two vendors, this offering marks the first time that Sieve Filtering (Internet standard RFC 3028) is available to GroupWise users. Sieve scripts are designed for advanced rule-based filtering of e-mail messages. As such, they are efficient in catching original spam messages and subsequent iterations — unlike other anti-spam technologies that catch only specific instances of spam. To keep current, Vircoms SPAMBuster team analyzes spam, and writes and updates Sieve scripts daily.
GWGuardian isolates all spam messages in a Quarantine for administrators to review and, if requested, release to the user if it was detected as a false positive.
GWGuardian also employs a multilayered defense mechanism to stop spammers from conducting spam raids on unsuspecting company mail servers. GroupWise Administrators can enforce authentication at the SMTP and POP/IMAP levels, access Real-Time Blacklists (directories of known spammers), and perform reverse DNS look-ups. A Block Scan Attack feature enables GWGuardian to deny access to spammers attempting to send an e-mail to a high number of people within a company or to exploit a company server to relay a high volume of spam to the outside world.
The two vendors estimate that their combined solution will reduce the costs of spam and spammer attacks for GroupWise’s installed base of more 34 million mailboxes.
“Spam costs companies money. Day after day, spam continually eats up employee productivity, IT resources, and bandwidth,” said Bertrand Houle, vice president of sales and marketing at Vircom. “The spam situation is no different in the GroupWise space … In recent studies, industry analysts found that by eliminating spam, enterprise users can annually recoup up to $60 per employee in infrastructure costs and hundreds of dollars per year in lost productivity, yielding an impressive average ROI of three months or less.”
Pierre Chamberland, CEO and Chief Evangelist of The Messaging Architects, discussed the need for a native GroupWise anti-spam solution in a prepared statement. “For enterprise users, having already spent considerable amounts of money and resources to build GroupWise into a ubiquitous, robust, and fault tolerant messaging system, it is clear that they need to takes steps to ensure that their users can continue to use GroupWise productively. Eliminating spam and spam attacks is a critical component of a layered approach to integral security on GroupWise.”
Vircom develops Internet infrastructure and security server solutions, including VOP Radius, VOP Mail, and VOP modusMail.
