As it celebrates the first birthday of its Sun Fire line, Sun Microsystems Monday announced it has lowered U.S. list prices across its Sun Fire server family.

This announcement comes the same day that IBM unveiled its eServer p670, a midrange server designed to compete with the Sun Fire 4800 and priced nearly $80,000 lower.

As it celebrates the first birthday of its Sun Fire line, Sun Microsystems Monday announced it has lowered U.S. list prices across its Sun Fire server family.

Sun claims the motivation behind the cuts are part of its commitment to help customers stretch their IT dollars while maximizing the payoff in the data center.

The price reductions span the entire Sun Fire line: the 3800, 4800, 4810, 6800, and 15K, and are effective immediately (all price reductions refer to an “average” configuration and are based on U.S. list prices):

  • For the Sun Fire 3800, Sun knocked 41 percent off of the price.
  • The Sun Fire 4800 with a typical configuration of 8 CPUs and 16 GB of memory is 31 percent less.
  • The Sun Fire 6800, typically configured with 16 CPUs and 32 GB of memory, is now priced 18 percent lower.
  • Pricing for the Sun Fire 15K, with a typical configuration of 32 CPUs and 64 GBs of memory, was lowered by 18 percent.

“Sun’s business model and volume leadership continues to allow us to move quickly to pass lower component prices and technology advances onto customers,” said Clark Masters, vice president and general manager, Enterprise Systems Products for Sun.

“What this means for customers is an exceptional solution, including superior functionality and RAS at even more aggressive market prices. Moreover, they can buy without having to lock themselves into closed, inbred service agreements and trailing technology,” Masters added.

Sun also announced that it will offer customers in the United States the option of trading in three qualified competitive servers to receive up to 30 percent off the purchase price of a new Sun Fire 3800, 4800, 4810, or 6800 server.
