Sun Microsystems this week powered up the the Sun Fire 3800, 4800, 4810, and 6800 Midframe servers with its Dynamic System Domains and Dynamic Reconfiguration tools. These additions bring mainframe-class software tools to Sun’s midrange systems.

Dynamic Reconfiguration enables administrators to attach and detach system resources (e.g., CPUs, memory, and I/O interfaces) without disrupting the production environment. Dynamic Reconfiguration also offers simplified resource management, the flexibility to redistribute computing resources, and increased performance and scalability.

Sun Microsystems this week powered up the the Sun Fire 3800, 4800, 4810, and 6800 Midframe servers with its Dynamic System Domains and Dynamic Reconfiguration tools. These additions bring mainframe-class software tools to Sun’s midrange systems.

Dynamic Reconfiguration is the technology behind Dynamic System Domains, which are fault- d security- isolated domains that can be resized to meet enterprises’ changing application needs. These availability and resource management features are designed to lower total cost of ownership by minimizing system downtime and allow for server consolidation.

Sun has incorporated Dynamic System Domains into its high-end servers since 1997. It is the first vendor to offer such functionality for midrange systems, and Sun believes it has a five-year advantage in delivering on this technology.

“Bringing Dynamic Reconfiguration to the Sun Fire Midframe product line and the Sun Fire 15K is central to Sun’s strategy of offering data-center customers uncompromised levels of RAS and efficient, flexible resource management, while keeping price points low,” said Clark Masters, vice president and general manager, Enterprise Systems Products for Sun.

“We’re the only server vendor to supply Dynamic Reconfiguration and fault-isolated Dynamic System Domains in this data-center class of system, which offers an extremely compelling advantage in the marketplace,” Masters added.
