On Monday, Sun Microsystems announced the Sun Cobalt Control Station, a server appliance management tool designed to streamline the management of hundreds of servers while easing the provisioning of new services.
The Control Station integrates with Sun’s Cobalt RaQ and Qube server appliances.
On Monday, Sun Microsystems announced the Sun Cobalt Control Station, a server appliance management tool designed to streamline the management of hundreds of servers while easing the provisioning of new services.
Control Station can manage hundreds of server appliances from a single location, thus simplifying tasks, like upgrading and patching server appliances, that are usually done individually. System alerts notify administrators, and metrics allow them to monitor the health and performance of systems containing their managed appliances.
“The Control Station augments the Sun Cobalt server appliance line, echoing the exceptional ease-of-use, flexibility, and reliability of our current solutions, and introducing extensive capabilities that ease and simplify both the day-to-day management of existing systems and the implementation of new services,” said Peder Ulander, Sun Microsystems director of marketing.
Sun Cobalt will also provide a software development kit (SDK) for Control Station that will allow other utilities to be incorporated into the module architecture and built as separate control modules. With these customization capabilities, enterprises can continue using proprietary utilities while using the Control Station to perform daily operations.
Organizations will also have the choice of configuring the Control Station as a multipurpose device, running several modules (such as performance monitoring and software management), or as a dedicated device.
The Control Station will be available directly through Sun and its worldwide sales channels starting November 20. Its list price is about $5,000 with variances depending on the configuration options selected.
