Fujitsu Adds Midrange Server to the Mix

In a move that it hopes will fill an open niche, Fujitsu Technology Solutions, in partnership with Sun Microsystems, is releasing PrimePower 800, a server aimed at the midrange market and capable of supporting two to 16 CPUs.

The PrimePower 800 is the latest addition to the PrimePower product line, a set of six servers that support one to two CPUs on the low end and up to 64 CPUs on the high end. The PrimePower 800 is being targeted to “the high-midrange and low-high-end market,” Tom Donnelly, Manager of PrimePower Solutions told ServerWatch.

This is a niche that few server are currently filling, Donnelly said. What further makes this PrimePower 800 unique is that the server can be partitioned, a feature that other servers in its class lack.

All of the servers in the PrimePower line offer enterprises “high availability, scalability, and reliability,” Donnelly said.

The servers are all fully Solaris SPARC-compliant and feature a system bus with crossbar switch technology adapted from Fujitsu’s mainframe design. Their maximum data transfer rate is 57.6 gigabytes per second.

Other PrimePower features include a system layout optimized for reliable operation; hot-swappable components, including system boards that can be replaced during operation; error checking/correction data protection on all levels of cache and data paths ensuring protection from 1-bit errors to prevent productivity disruption; and failover clustering
software that has been battle-tested in hundreds of server installations worldwide.

Pricing for PrimePower products ranges from $6,500 for the PrimePower 200 to $10 million for the PrimePower 2000. FTS also offers consulting and tech support arrangements for an additional fee.

Fujitsu Technology Solutions was founded in November 2000. It combines the resources and expertise of the Fujitsu subsidiaries that comprise Fujitsu Technology Solutions, and leverages the research and development and manufacturing capabilities of the parent company. Other product offerings include Primeregy Intel-architecture-based servers, the GSS 4900 Modular Storage System, various storage-area network options, NetApp F840Enterprise File Servers, and StorStream Media Content Server.
