Compaq Computer Corp. this week joined the throng of hardware vendors targeting servers to small and midsize enterprises with the introduction of its Multifunction Small Enterprise solution. At $1,200, Compaq’s product is pricier than the sub-$1,000 offerings from Dell, IBM, and Sun.

The offering was developed to meet the needs of cost-conscious enterprises looking for reliable, simplified, and secure solutions for running day-to-day business operations. The fully configured hardware and software package comes with a variety of preinstalled applications for functions such as e-mail, file/print sharing, Internet access, firewall, Web hosting, and network-delivered services.

The Multifunction Small Enterprise solution is based on Compaq’s ProLiant platform. It integrates the Compaq ProLiant ML300 series of servers with Mitel Networks’ Linux-based SME Server V5 with ServiceLink.

“We’re excited to be working with Compaq to help introduce Mitel’s new SME Server V5 with ServiceLink,” said Kim Morrison, GM, Network Server Solutions Group, Mitel Networks. “The combination of Compaq’s industry-leading ProLiant server platform with our award-winning software and services delivers an unbeatable solution to small to medium-sized businesses and remote branch offices.”

Compaq is using its channel distribution model to deliver this solution. As part of a key initiative targeted for small businesses, PC Connection will distribute the solution for 120 days.

The Multifunction Small Enterprise solution is available for order immediately and is priced starting at $1,199. More details are available at http://www.compaq.com/products/servers/linux.
