BMC Software Wednesday introduced plans to expand its Linux management initiative with new offerings designed to enable enterprises to better manage the Linux life cycle. These offerings center around Linux on zSeries.
The strategy has four cornerstones:
- Performance management and planning support
- Provisioning and configuration management support
- Infrastructure management support
- Service management support
BMC Software Wednesday introduced plans to expand its Linux management initiative with new offerings designed to enable enterprises to better manage the Linux life cycle. These offerings center around Linux on zSeries.
The software infrastructure management vendor discussed the four components of its strategy with ServerWatch at Linux World in New York City this week.
Performance Management and Planning Support
BMC plans to release its Performance Assurance Solutions (which includes Patrol Perform and Patrol Predict) for zSeries Linux this summer. Patrol Perform for zSeries and Patrol Predict for zSeries is currently in beta.
A version of Perform and Predict in Intel-based Linux already exists.
The Patrol products support the performance management and planning phase. They help enterprises determine when to invest computer resources and proactively manage performance. Patrol Performance Assurance also enables enterprises to consolidate Web servers to optimize current assets and reduce total cost of ownership.
Provisioning and Configuration Management Support
Building on its recent joint development initiative with Aduva, BMC unveiled a management tool designed to facilitate transparent remote deployment and the subsequent management of thousands of dissimilar Linux systems from a central location. The product automates many administrative tasks related to the deployment and provisioning of Linux servers and thus reduces the cost of managing Linux images.
BMC is leveraging Aduva”s technology to extend its provisioning and configuration management offerings for Linux on zSeries, and it has rebranded the product Manager for Linux. BMC will oversee the marketing, selling, and level-one support of the product.
Infrastructure Management Support
Another offering announced Wednesday combines Patrol and Mainview to enable enterprises to manage their Linux servers from a distributed or mainframe model. Linux Server Management allows system administrators to monitor Linux servers from a single console that identifies and corrects problems before they impact the business. Administrators can thus focus on creating and managing the data itself. They can also chose whether to implement just Patrol or Mainview or both.
The Mainview component of Linux Server Management is available now, and the
Patrol component will be available in March. Pricing has not yet been set. This combined offering is available only for Linux on zSeries at press time.
BMC also announced its Business Integrated Scheduling solution, Control-M, is now available for Linux on zSeries. (It has been available on Intel for some time now.) Control-M for Linux on zSeries provides infrastructure and technologies to meet mission-critical business requirements. It integrates the batch processes running on Linux and other diverse systems into a unified, manageable business process, enabling all scheduling to be done in one application. Control-M offers a focal point for workflow management with features such as unified business process view and automatic failover.
Service Management Support
The final component of BMC”s new Linux strategy is its service management solutions. With these solutions, enterprises can manage their architecture from an application perspective, see an end-to-end perspective of the environment, and consolidate management information onto a central console.
BMC will offer a variety of service management support solutions for zSeries Linux. Patrol Internet Server Manager, Patrol for WebSphere Application Server, and Patrol for BEA WebLogic are scheduled for release during the first half of 2002.
