Bottom Line:

The HPE BL460c with the c3000 enclosure is a suitable choice for SMBs and lower-end business server needs. Its interoperabiity with hybrid IT workloads means it can be plugged into plenty of situations without need for great in-house expertise. In short, it's a reliable workhorse that gets the job done at a reasonable price.

But for those with more heavy duty requirements, other blades in the guide may be a better choice. Stability is the HPE BL460c's hallmark – this unit represents mature technology. But if your company is willing to spend more and has a more intensive work load, keep looking.

Product Description:

This is the tenth generation of the HPE ProLiant BL460c blade and it is available in two different enclosures: Either the HPE BladeSystem c7000 rack enclosure, which is 10U high and holds up to 16 blades plugged vertically; or the HPE BladeSystem c3000 enclosure, which is 6U high and holds up to 8 blades horizontally. The latter is much cheaper to deploy.

The BL460c is designed to scale business performance and securely drive traditional and hybrid IT workloads across converged infrastructures. It comes with HPE OneView for management, and HPE ROM for initialization and validation of hardware components. This is useful when configuring processors, chipsets, memory, PCI devices and PCIe cards.

The HPE Smart Array P204i-b 12G SAS modular Controller with 1GB flash is included, as well as HPE Integrated Lights-Out (HPE iLO) for ongoing management, service alerting, reporting and remote management. Intelligent provisioning and maintenance is also part of the package. However, storage is sold separately. It can accommodate up to two small form factor hot-plug SAS/SATA/HDD or SSD hard drives, or 2 ultra Form Factor (uF)F NVMe or SATA drives (up to 4 TB of storage).

“Management of HPE BladeSystem is simple. Overall, the blades have been stable, which is the main reason why we still trust HPE for most of our server needs,” said an Operations Manager in financial services.
