More on cloud computing

CA Technologies has acquired 4Base technology, a privately-held consulting firm specializing in virtualization and cloud infrastructure.

The virtualization and cloud computing infrastructure consulting firm will enhance CA’s services division.

With the purchase, CA (NASDAQ: CA) said it will use 4Base to create a new virtualization and cloud strategy group within its services division. Terms of the deal, announced Thursday, were not disclosed.

“As CA Technologies expands its role as a strategic partner and advisor to customers on the journey from virtualization to cloud computing, we are investing in both the software and consulting services needed to achieve substantial business results,” Adam Elster, general manager of CA Services, said in a statement.

Elster noted that CA itself was a 4Base customer before the purchase and the company has consulted with a number of other blue chip technology clients including Cisco, EMC, NetApp and VMware.

“Through this experience, 4Base has developed a broad base of skills, knowledge and experience that will play a critical role in CA Technologies ability to help customers quickly plan, adopt and execute transformative strategies and technologies that make their business more agile,” Elster added.

The news comes at a time of growing interest by enterprises in cloud computing and virtualization, as companies with tight IT-budgets look for ways to save on further investments in their data center infrastructure.

Paul Camacho, principal and co-founder of 4Base, said the acquisition will help CA customers realize the potential of virtualization of cloud-computing technologies.

“Enterprises have high interest in virtualization and cloud computing, but suffer from a lack of proven best practices,” Camacho said in a statement.

“We are thrilled that CA Technologies chose 4Base to bring validated on-site experience, proven approaches and highly skilled resources to its customers,” Camacho continued.”We look forward to helping new and existing CA Technologies customers eliminate VM stall and develop a dynamic IT service supply chain that transforms IT from a cost center to a business enabler, increases business agility, reduces IT costs, and increases quality of service.”

Last month CA expanded its CA Virtual portfolio of virtualization management applications, adding five new applications. The company has also been busy on the acquisition front this year.

Back in February, CA announced the acquisition of Nimsoft, a privately held developer of IT performance and availability monitoring software, for $350 million in cash.
