SuSE Linux Wednesday announced that version 8 of SuSE Linux, the company’s Linux operating system and applications package, will start shipping April 22.

SuSE Linux 8.0 offers a variety of security levels, including mouse-click activation of SuSE Personal Firewall 2. It also offers GNU Privacy Guard (GPG) encryption to protect laptop and desktop data. GPG enables only authorized users to read e-mail stored within SuSE Linux. SuSE Linux 8.0’s automated installation improves hardware detection, while YaST2, SuSE’s system assistant, detects installed Windows partitions and makes suggestions for allocating hard disk space and software selection.

SuSE Linux 8.0 comes with a KDE-3-based GUI and version 0.9 of Advanced Linux Sound Architecture (ALSA), an application designed to enhance CD writing, viewing, editing videos, and sound mixing with an editing studio and synthesizer that supports most professional and personal sound cards.

SuSE Linux 8.0, uses Kernel 2.4.18 and more than 1,200 drivers, along with XFree86 4.2 support of graphics cards and glibc 2.2.5. In addition to numerous improvements in the areas of firewall configuration, ISDN, modem, and mail, YaST2 now comes with a new module for the activation of high-rate data transfer modes for hard disks (direct memory access). Other included Linux tools are Apache 1.3.23 and file and print server for Windows networks and Samba 2.2.3a.

SuSE Linux 8.0 is scheduled to hit stores April 22. It will also be available direct from SuSE Linux. Two version of SuSE Linux 8.0 will be available: Personal (comprised of 3 CDs, 2 manuals, and 60 days of installation support) is $49.90; and Professional (comprised of 7 CDs, 1 DVD, 3 manuals, and 90 days of installation support) is $79.90.
