iPlanet App Server to Have Linux Version
With this release, Sun will offer a full Linux environment for developers who want to develop and deploy on the open source operating system, Deborah Andrade, Group Marketing Manager for iPlanet Application Services told ServerWatch.Sun Microsystems Monday announced a Linux version of its iPlanet Application Server software.
The release is slated for the second quarter of 2002.
"Over the past year, we have seen increased demand among our customer base for Linux support," said Wes Wasson, vice president of iPlanet product marketing at Sun Microsystems.
"Coupled with the Forte For Java Enterprise Edition, Sun will soon offer open source developers a compelling and comprehensive end-to-end Linux development environment that enables developers to easily build, test and debug robust services on demand and J2EE applications," Wasson added.
Sun already offers a Linux version of iPlanet Web Server, iPlanet Message Queue, and Forte for Java. Currently, developers who wish to use Sun products can do so up to the deployment phase; then they must switch to Solaris, Windows, IBM AIX, HP-UX, or OS/390. The most frequent platform chosen for deployment is Solaris, Andrade said.
Sun believes this release underscores its continued commitment to cross-platform support across the Sun Open Net Environment (Sun ONE), the company's vision, architecture, platform, and expertise for developing and deploying services on demand.
To further entice developers, the Linux version of iPlanet Application Server will be free to develop on. A similar deal has been available for the Solaris version since October 2001.
A full-featured version of iPlanet Application Server that can be used for deployment is priced from $3,000 per CPU to $39,995 per CPU, depending on the version purchased.
