Starting Tuesday, Solaris users can download Solaris 9 Developer Early Access software from Sun Microsystems’ Web site.

This is the first beta version of Sun’s Solaris 9 Operating Environment (OE) software.

Starting Tuesday, Solaris users can download Solaris 9 Developer Early Access software from Sun Microsystems’ Web site.

Users can download Solaris 9 OE through Sun’s Early Access program. Through the Early Access program, developers can evaluate an unsupported version of Solaris 9 OE software and test applications on the new operating environment.

The free download is designed to allow developers to take advantage of the new capabilities in Solaris 9 OE software early and let them evaluate and test current Solaris OE applications without making changes. In addition, Sun plans to solicit feedback from Early Access program participants to help further develop Solaris 9 OE for general availability.

“Solaris 9 Developer Early Access will allow users to provide critical input as we move towards the final shipping version. The upcoming version of Solaris OE software promises to build on the Solaris OE hallmarks of availability, scalability and security for the Internet age,” said Andy Ingram, vice president of marketing for Solaris software.

Solaris 9 OE is available for SPARC and Intel systems.

New features include:

  • Multiple page size support in the kernel for better memory management
  • Improved threading library for better scaling and performance
  • Linux APIs, commands, and utilities that enable most Linux applications to easily be recompiled
  • Linux compatibility mode that allows Linux Intel applications to run unchanged
  • Reconfiguration Coordination Manager API that allows applications to react to dynamic reconfiguration events

Solaris 9 OE is available for download at http://www.sun.com/solaris/programs/solaris9ea.

The final version of Solaris 9 OE is scheduled for release during calendar year 2002.
