AOL and Lotus have agreed to work together to conduct an instant messaging (IM) interoperability trial using their respective IM test systems.
AOL’s AIM and Lotus’ Sametime will communicate with each other on a server-to-server basis via the Session Initiation Protocol for Instant Messaging and Presence Leveraging (SIMPLE), one of the IM standards currently being considered by the Internet Engineering Task Force.
The trial partnership is part of AOL’s ongoing efforts to explore how to enable interoperability between AOL and third-party IM systems in a secure and reliable manner. The trial will study system-specific technical issues related to the use of SIMPLE for communication between AIM and third-party IM systems.
“Lotus’ market-leading expertise in real-time collaboration and messaging software will be of great benefit as we examine how we might enable interoperability between IM systems using this new protocol. AOL is committed to achieving IM interoperability in a way that protects consumers’ system performance, privacy, and security and this trial will help us better understand technically how IM interoperability might work,” said Donn Davis, president of Interactive Properties, AOL.
“We’re excited to join AOL in this endeavor and potentially create larger opportunities for IM interoperability. The trial is a significant step in leveraging the power and widespread use of AOL’s AIM technology and the versatility of a real-time collaboration offering such as Lotus Sametime,” said Al Zollar, general manager, Lotus Software added.
