PROPER WAY TO UNINSTALL WINDOWS NT FROM YOUR COMPUTER.

PROPER WAY TO UNINSTALL WINDOWS NT FROM YOUR COMPUTER.

In this article I am going to tell you one of my problem which I have faced recently. One of my client wanted me to install WINDOWS NT Workstation to his computer to add more security to his
computer. His system already has Windows 98 installed in it. So I installed Windows NT Workstation to it and arranged a multi boot with Windows 98. After a month he came to me and told me to uninstall Windows NT and he want only Windows 98. I went to his room and I uninstalled Windows NT. Following is the way to uninstall Windows NT
in a proper way without losing the data.

UNINSTALLING WINDOWS NT FROM FAT PARTITION.

Boot your computer to Windows 98 (if you have configured to multi boot) then go to control panel and double click ‘ADD/REMOVE PROGRAMS’
icon. In the dialog box click on to the ‘STARTUP DISK’ tab. Then click the ‘CREATE DISK’ button .It’ll ask for a blank floppy and create a
bootdisk. After creating a boot disk copy the ‘SYS.COM’ utility to the same
floppy. SYS.COM can be found inside ‘C:WINDOWSCOMMAND’ folder. Now you can reboot the system using the
boot floppy which you have created (if it is not booting from floppy; make necessary changes in your CMOS
Setup). It would give you a ‘A:>’prompt. Then type ‘sys c:’ and press enter key. The
program will overwrite the Master Boot Record with dos booting files ie:- IO.SYS, MSDOS.SYS and COMMAND.COM. Remove the floppy and reboot the computer, this time you computer should boot to dos. After this you need to load Windows 98.For that create file called ‘AUTOEXEC.BAT’ and inside it type ‘C:WINDOWSwin.com’ and save it to
‘C:’. Now reboot again this time it will boot to Windows 98 directly.

Deleteing Unwanted WINDOWS NT Files

To complete the uninstallation of Windows NT follow these steps also. After loading Windows 98 open ‘MY COMPUTER’ and open
‘C’ drive. Now locate the following files, ‘PAGEFILE.SYS, NTLDR, BOOT.INI, NTDETECT.COM, BOOTSECT.DOS. Mind you, some of these files may have attributes like hidden and read only, so make sure that you remove those attributes before deleting them. And make sure that you remove the ‘C:WINNT’ folder and ‘C:PROGRAM FILESWINDOWS NT’ folder to complete the uninstallation.

UNINSTALLING WINDOWS NT FROM NTFS PARTITION.

To remove Windows NT from a NTFS partition you should boot from a bootdisk which I mentioned earlier, make sure that you have ‘FDISK.EXE’ in the floppy. Because no other operating system can access NTFS unless you have any third party utilities which can convert NTFS back to FAT. So the only way is to remove Windows NT is to delete the partition. After getting the prompt launch the FDISK program. Then type ‘3’ to get the menu showing ‘Delete Non-Dos Partition’. Then type ‘4’ to delete Non- Dos Partition. After this create a primary
partition using FDISK program and format it using ‘FORMAT/S’ to make it dos bootable. Then
you have to load other operating system of your choice.
