E-Commerce Solutions today announced that Hewlett-Packard HWP has licensed and is shipping iPlanet Directory Server bundled with its HP-UX operating environment.

By including the iPlanet Directory Server for use on every HP-UX 11 system, directory services become one of the strategic components for enabling businesses to migrate toward the Internet economy. This re-affirms: 1) iPlanet’s strategy to license the directory server to major platform vendors and 2) HP’s commitment to the commercial Unix server market.

“We are thrilled that HP has selected iPlanet Directory Server as the cornerstone directory services technology for HP-UX,” said Stuart Wells, senior vice president of infrastructure products at iPlanet.

The iPlanet Directory Server operates as a central repository of user data. It controls preferences, access rights, and security levels. The product is designed for large e-commerce deployments and helps enable companies to manage user names, passwords, access control, and security authorization for customers, suppliers, partners, and employees.

The iPlanet Directory Server software will continue to be sold separately by the iPlanet sales force, and as part of the iPlanet Unified User Management solution. The Unified User Management solution includes a complete PKI-based security platform, meta-directory, delegated administration and policy management. By deploying the complete solution, customers can leverage a common user management infrastructure, enabling rapid deployment of new Web services, differentiated levels of security, and reduced administrative costs of managing user information in multiple directories.

In various benchmarking exercises iPlanet Directory Server was found to perform
up to 42 times faster than Microsoft Active Directory and up to 516
times faster than Novell eDirectory.

According to statistics garnered by IDC, iPlanet sold more than 175 million licenses worldwide in 1999, and thus claimed approximately 70 percent of the LDAP market.

Directory server customers include such heavyweights as First Union, Nortel Networks, American Express, and MCI Worldcom.

iPlanet Directory Server is currently shipping with HP-UX 11 operating environment,
and will be available with the upcoming version of HP-UX, 11i. The iPlanet Directory
Server for the HP-UX 11 operating environment includes a license for intranet
use only. Additional licenses for the extranet are available from HP and
iPlanet. For additional information on HP-UX operating environment, visit HP’s site.
