NetRoad NewsServer is currently the only news server available that will run as a Network Loadable Module (NLM) on existing file servers. The server will allow Netware 3.x/4.x and IntranetWare networks to server and host Internet-based USENET newsgroups as well as Intranet-based local newsgroups. TCP/IP Internet users can access news feeds from NetRoad using any standard NNTP newsreader (like Agent, Outlook Express, or Netscape News); IPX users can do the same when using an IPX/IP gateway like the NetRoad FireWALL product.

Potential Internet applications using NetRoad include finding qualified employees by posting employment opportunities; helping customer support managers keep customers abreast of problems, fixes, and updates; and providing a forum for customers on product feedback and features input. Potential intranet applications include setting up a project collaboration forum for workgroups, establishing an area for support and the exchange of news for company employees, coordinating ‘tele-meetings’, and discussing topics outside of conventional meetings.
NetRoad NewsServer is currently the only news server available that will run as a Network Loadable Module (NLM) on existing file servers.

NetRoad features include NDS authentication (on NetWare 4.x) for controlling newsgroup access and for creating private discussion groups, configurable expiration of articles, flexible article spooling and disk space maintenance, back-end capabilities for transmission of articles to specific sites, and more. NewsServer is also designed to be easy to install, configure, and administer for network administrators. A graphical user interface that runs on Windows 95 and NT platforms allows for easy configuration and also simplifies on-going maintenance of the server. Features like configurable article expiration also aid the administrator by automatically purging the news database on a periodic basis, which helps to ensure that disk space on the server isn’t wasted.

The downloadable release of NetRoad NewsServer can be evaluated for 30 days. The production version costs $695 for fifty users and $1,295 for an unlimited number of users. The news server’s performance and highly scalable architecture make it a good choice for both entry-level and large-scale deployment. If you work in a Netware environment and are in need of a scalable, flexible, and high-powered news server, NetRoad NewsServer should be the first server you check out.
