IBM and SAP Portals Open the Door to Application Integration

IBM and SAP Portals announced Thursday they are working together to enable customers to integrate enterprise business applications from SAP and various other companies with solutions deployed using IBM’s WebSphere Portal Server.

In addition to integrating applications from SAP Portals, apps from PeopleSoft, Baan, and Oracle Financials will also be able to be integrated with WebSphere Portal Server. Support for integrated access in expected to be available in the fourth quarter of 2001.

IBM and SAP Portals announced Thursday they are working together to enable customers to integrate enterprise business applications from SAP and various other companies with solutions deployed using IBM’s WebSphere Portal Server.

With this agreement between IBM and SAP Portals, WebSphere Portal Server customers will be able to maximize their enterprise application investments while using integrated portal solutions, according to IBM.

As part of the agreement, IBM will resell and distribute SAP Portals iViews. In turn, SAP Portals will provide a Java 2 Enterprise Edition version of its iViewServer that IBM will license and include in its WebSphere Portal Server.

“Our agreement with SAP Portals allows us to extend the customer value of WebSphere Portal Server by providing integrated access to many of the leading cross-industry, enterprise applications,” said Larry Bowden, vice president, e-Portals solutions, IBM Software Group.

SAP Portals iViews enables users to leverage their enterprise portal to provide data from many multiple sources and search those sources to answer all kinds of user questions. It offers personalization, security, and single sign-on features as well as extensibility and solid functionality that incorporate aspects of each enterprise application.

IBM’s WebSphere Portal Server serves is a key component of IBM’s portal strategy. IBM’s portal software offers navigation, customization, personalization, and a variety of other features.
