Hewlett Packard Enterprise (HPE) is updating its enterprise racks as well power distribution units (PDU) with a new generation of server infrastructure products.

Gary Craze, WorldWide Product Marketing Manager, Rack & Power Infrastructure at Hewlett Packard Enterprise at HPE, explained to ServerWatch that the G2 products will replace the current generation (G1) products.

“We made a strategic investment in our Rack and Power infrastructure product line last year, which culminated in refreshing over about 90 percent of our Rack and Power product portfolio starting last November and wrapping up with this announcement,” Craze said.HPE G2 racks

Craze added that HPE spent considerable time with clients and analysts in the product space in order to develop products that go beyond just parity in the marketplace, and additionally give customers a foundation for their datacenter compute environments for years to come.

“For most of our sustaining products, there is a one-to-one transition from the G1 series to the new G2 products for each model,” Craze said.

He also noted there are new models that support trends in the marketplace such as network racks, taller/wider/deeper racks for denser enterprise computing, and a more comprehensive PDU portfolio to support customers ranging from SMB environments to enterprise environments.

While HPE is a supporter of the Open Compute Project, which is defining its own set of next-generation rack and power specifications, Crave commented that the HPE G2 products are primarily focused on the mainstream product environments such as standard rack servers and blades that live in the typical world of the EIA-310 standards.

“For the vast majority of customers in our space, their IT purchases tend to be within our own compute lines as well as complimentary IT equipment that lives within that standard,” Crave said. “Thus, while HPE does offer the Cloudline products that live in the OCP standards environment, the G2 family of racks are purposefully designed to be the most optimal racks for mainstream applications.”

A Peak at What Else Is on HPE’s Rack Roadmap

Looking forward, HPE has a number of items on its rack roadmap, including more focus on developing physical security-related solutions.

“Datacenter security is one of the top items in our customers’ list of concerns, and enhancing the physical security of the compute equipment within the rack is a key concern,” Craze said. “Another area we’re taking a look at is the development of racks that VARs could more easily integrate into their solutions.”

“Finally, we’re evaluating requirements around the various initiatives within HPE that revolve around the SMB market,” he said.
