Yet another big name IT vendor is joining OpenStack.
HP joins Dell, Citrix, Cisco, Ubuntu and more than 86 other vendors in the land-grab rush for open source stack superemacy.
HP announced this week that it was going to be joining the open source OpenStack cloud infrastructure project. OpenStack is a year-old project originally started by NASA and Rackspace for delivering a cloud computing and storage platform. During the course of the past year, OpenStack has attracted more than 90 member organizations, including Dell, Citrix and Cisco.
“HP is taking an active role in the OpenStack community, and we see this as an opportunity to enable customers, partners and developers with unique infrastructure and development solutions across public, private and hybrid cloud environments,” Emil Sayegh, VP, Cloud Services, wrote in a blog post. “HP recognizes that open and interoperable cloud infrastructure and services are critical in delivering the next generation of cloud-based services to developers, businesses and consumers.”
HP (NYSE:HPQ) did not respond to a request for comment from InternetNews.com by press time.
Earlier this week, rival server vendor Dell officially announced its Dell OpenStack Solution, which leverages the open source cloud solution. Dell (NASDAQ: DELL) is set to offer services and support based on a reference architecture that uses Dell’s PowerEdge servers.
Dell wasn’t the only hardware vendor promoting OpenStack this week. Nebula, a new startup led by the Chris Kemp, former CTO of NASA, is also taking aim at building OpenStack hardware. Kemp is no stranger to OpenStack and is the person behind the NASA effort that helped get OpenStack started last year.
Competition in the OpenStack space also includes an in-development solution from Citrix known as Project Olympus.
The most recent OpenStack project release codenamed ‘cactus’ came out in April. The next major release is codenamed Diablo. It is currently set for a September 22 release.
