Getting visibility into what’s going on in virtual servers is no easy task for server administrators, which is where VMware’s Log Insight product line comes into play.
Log Insight first debuted in June of 2013 and is now being updated to version 2.
Bill Roth, Group Product Marketing Manager for Log Insight at VMware, explained to ServerWatch that the new version is faster than its predecessors at ingesting and analyzing log data. Roth noted data from across an organization can now be ingested 30 percent faster than with the Log Insight 1.0 release.
The new release also includes new machine learning-based technologies aimed at making it easier and faster to group issues together.
The back-end database used by Log Insight is something that Roth referred to as being “Hadoop-like.” Hadoop is an open-source Big Data platform that is widely used by enterprises.
“It’s internal technology to VMware,” Roth said.
Data on its own isn’t always easy for humans to digest, which is why Log Insight 2 offers new data visualization with improved charts and tables.
VMware Log Insight 2.0 also now includes a Windows Agent that makes it easier for the system to collect log file information from Windows machines. Roth noted that the agent is a small .msi file that can be bulk deployed.
“In previous Log Insight releases, customers had to look to a third party to get Windows logs,” Roth said. “We wanted something smaller, faster and lightweight, and that’s why we built our own Windows agents.”
By including the ability to collect Windows logs, VMware now has an end-to-end log visibility solution that the company can support.
For Linux users, VMware has long supported the syslog protocol for log collection. Roth noted that with the Windows Agent, VMware is now fully extending its visibility out to Windows.
