Beginning in October, SuSE Linux Enterprise Sever 8 will be an option for enterprises deploying SGI Altix 3000 servers and superclusters. In addition to including its Unix variant on the SGI Altix 3000 64-processor platform, SuSE will work with SGI to develop (and later support) a 128-processor single node capable of scaling the server further. SuSE will also provide third-level support for SGI customers.
Earlier this month, SGI announced plans to extend the Altix platform to encompass 128 processors within a single instance of Linux. SuSE has hopped on board, and will work with SGI to develop the offering, which is scheduled to hit the streets next year.
The companies have agreed to streamline other development efforts as well.
SGI and SuSE are touting their combined system’s capability to deliver large-scale systems. The processors are capable of addressing high performance computing and technical database requirements.
According to the companies, this collaboration also opens doors for further expansion of standard Linux in the marketplace and broadens market opportunities for both vendors.
“Together, SuSE and SGI can deliver high-performance Linux systems capable of handling the unique system load demands of scalable integer processing, throughput, and memory,” said Uwe Heine, chief alliance officer, SuSE Linux.
SuSE and SGI are positioning the new offering as ideal for a broad range of markets, from bio-informatics to automotive design.
