Cisco Systems, which has been nibbling at the edges of the growing container market, is now jumping into the space with the acquisition of an eight-person startup that is less than two years old and launched its first product in June. Officials with the tech vendor this week announced its acquisition of ContainerX, whose technology […]

There also have been some high-profile wins, including PayPal and Baidu, which are looking to bring AR-based systems into their environments. During the TechCon show, a Morgan Stanley official said the financial services firm was testing an application on a Cavium-based system, and HPE and EMC said they were building ARM-based storage systems and testing […]

IBM has unveiled a 7-nanometer test chip, looking to get a jump on Intel as the processor industry looks to extend Moore’s Law while continuing to shrink the processors. Big Blue introduced the 7nm test node July 9, saying it is the result of five years of development work by an alliance of IBM Research, […]

Advanced Micro Devices continues to lay the groundwork for its ARM-based server processor plans, unveiling its upcoming eight-core Opteron A1100 Series “Seattle” chip and a development kit complete with an open-source software stack. Also at the Open Compute Summit event in San Jose, Calif., Jan. 28, AMD officials announced the company is contributing a microserver […]

The SeaMicro SM15000 systems and Freedom fabric will be the drivers of these capabilities, Feldman said. When SeaMicro initially was developing its microservers, they were based on Intel’s low-power Atom platform. However, they now also use server chips from AMD (Opteron) and Intel (Xeon), and the SM15000s that Verizon will run will use all three […]

However, Intel officials say the x86-based Xeon Phi chips—the Knights Landing chips could come later in 2014—are a key part of their neo-heterogeneity pitch, noting that while HPC environments will use both processors and coprocessors or accelerators, Xeon Phi enables Intel to offer common and familiar underlying programming model and tools.
