Ximian Connects Evolution Users to Sun ONE
Desktop software company Ximian and Sun Microsystems have announced the Sun ONE Connector for Ximian Evolution. The software allows integration of Sun ONE users running Linux and Solaris desktops and Evolution, Ximian's email and calendaring application. Ximian's Connector brings Solaris and Linux-based Evolution clients into the Sun ONE Communications fold with calendar, mail, and contact management.
With the product, Sun ONE users can define and manage email folders, propose meetings with and view free/busy time of other Sun ONE users, access personal contacts and global address lists. Ximian Evolution's other features include QuickSearch, vFolders, threaded email view, in-line text editing and synchronization with Palm handhelds.
The product is similar to Ximian's Connector for Microsoft Exchange, which allows Evolution users to function as clients of Microsoft Exchange 2000.
Ximian Evolution supports many Linux distributions and UNIX variants, including Solaris, Red Hat, Mandrake, SuSE, and more. Ximian Evolution also provides support for IMAP, POP, SMTP, LDAP, iCalendar and others.
Sun expects to ship the Sun ONE Connector for Ximian Evolution software for Solaris, Sun Linux, and other Linux operating systems with the Sun ONE Calendar Server beginning in mid 2003. Ximian expects to ship the product through its own distribution channels around the same time.
Sun ONE Communications products also include a new synchronization tool that enables synchronization to Microsoft Outlook 98, 2000, Windows CE devices, and Palm Desktops. Users can download the synchronization tool at http://wwws.sun.com/software/download/products/Sync_1.1.html.
