Earlier this week, the OpenBSD organization released OpenBSD v2.6. OpenBSD can be downloaded free from the OpenBSD organization's site. Some of its FTP mirror sites are currently not showing the new release, however. A CD version of OpenBSD can also be purchased directly from the OpenBSD organization, either via its Web site or by telephone, or ordered from bookstores. Instructions for installation are available on the OpenBSD site.

OpenBSD is a free, multiplatform 4.4BSD-based Unix-like operating system. Its emphasis is on portability, standardization, correctness, and security. OpenBSD supports binary emulation of most binaries from SVR4 (Solaris), FreeBSD, Linux, BSDI, SunOS, and HPUX.

The amount of changes in version 2.6 are quite numerous, but key ones include reliability patches for the PowerPC port, SSH's (OpenSSH's) addition to the base system, improved support for ext2fs, additional security fixes, USB support, the addition of Perl 5.005_03 to the base system, fixes to the ATAPI support, a quicker install process, and many manual page updates.

Included with the OpenBSD v2.6 CD are the complete install components for six architectures: alpha, amiga, hp300, i386, mac68k and SPARC (the CDs are bootable on i386, sparc and alpha); a full source tree (ready for AnonCVS use); the latest XFree86 binaries for all architectures; the latest XFree86 source code with small modifications; and about 200 prebuilt binary packages for i386, alpha, SPARC, and 68KB-based architectures. In addition, OpenBSD's ports tree has been enhanced.

OpenBSD on CD is priced at $30 per copy plus shipping. Orders for 20 copies or more receive a 40 percent discount. If ordered online or via telephone, a shipping charge of $3 will be applied to all orders shipped within the United States and Canada, and $4 for orders shipped throughout the rest of the world. The CD can also be shipped via Federal Express for an additional fee.

The ISBN for OpenBSD is 0-9683637-4-1.
