Cool Tools: The Evaluation Version Upgrade Tool
A question that comes up frequently in my conversations with MCSE students relates to whether or not they can upgrade their version of Windows 2000. Many find themselves in a situation where they installed an evaluation version of Windows 2000 and then made many customized changes to it, only to have the installation "bomb out" after 120 days.A question that comes up frequently in my conversations with MCSE students relates to whether or not they can upgrade their version of Windows 2000. What Upgrade Flavor Do You Have?
You can upgrade the evaluation version of Windows 2000, but the procedure depends on what version of the operating system you have current installed and what version you want to upgrade to. Microsoft has implemented new anti-piracy mechanisms to help people comply with the upgrade licensing agreement.
The good news is that if you have a Full Version of Windows 2000, and want to upgrade the evaluation version using the Full Version CD-ROM, there's nothing special you have to do. Just pop in the CD-ROM and then select the upgrade option. All your configuration settings and program installations will remain intact. Be sure you don't choose the fresh installation option, or you can potentially lose your configuration and program settings.
What's Your Upgrade Path?
If you have an Upgrade Version, and not the Full Version, then things get a little more complicated. Here are the upgrade paths you can use:
You can upgrade to:
Windows 9x, Windows NT 3.51 or 4.0
Windows 2000 Professional
Windows NT 3.51 or 4.0 Server or Windows NT 4.0 Terminal Server Edition
Windows 2000 Server with 5,10 or 25 CALs
Windows NT 4.0 Enterprise Edition
Windows 2000 Advanced Server with 25 CALs
If you own one of the qualifying products noted in the table, then you would be able to upgrade your evaluation version using an Upgrade Version of Windows 2000.
Perform The Upgrade
To begin the upgrade, you'll need to download the Upgrade Utility from the Microsoft web site. Install the upgrade checker program and run it. It will check to see if you have qualifying product based on the information in the table and prepare the Evaluation edition you have installed so that it can be upgraded. You also have a choice to do a clean install if you wish to do that. Then install your Upgrade Version, and voila! You have upgraded your Evaluation Version
