This tip will help you to avoid using the Excel Query Extract Tool. I have used this tool to export Query \ Collection results, Advertisements and Site Status messages  directly from the MMC. This feature will not work for SMS Admin Consoles running within MMC versions priorto 1.2.  Dana Daugherty gives us this great tip for exporting queries straight out of the SMS Administrator Console.

Try this: From within the the SMS SP2 Admin Console open the Queries Tree, from the left pane right-click on the a query and select run. Right-click the same query again, select Export List from the pop-up menu. In the Save As Type drop-down box select .csv. This feature will allow you to save the query in a format that can be opened in Excel.
