SuSE Linux announced this week it will be the first to market with a Linux operating system for IBM’s eServer iSeries.

SuSE Linux Developer’s Edition for iSeries will be available directly from SuSE by mid-August for $199.

SuSE Linux announced this week it will be the first to market with a Linux operating system for IBM’s eServer iSeries.

The product is designed to enable system administrators and application developers to use SuSE Linux as both an operating system and a development platform for e-business applications across the enterprise.

SuSE Linux Developer’s Edition will be available across the entire IBM eServer product line.

eServer iSeries is IBM’s high-performance, integrated business server aimed at small to midsize enterprises.

IBM announced its intention to offer Linux partitioning in late-July. In addition to partnering with SuSE Linux, the company is working with Turbo Linux.

SuSE Linux Developer’s Edition is being touted as an ideal solution for enterprises looking to consolidate heterogeneous server farms as a uniform IT infrastructure, as it not only reduces administration expenses, but also minimizes the costs for the development or acquisition of strategic software products.

“Small to midsize customers are searching for integrated, enterprise-class Linux solutions that help them reduce server sprawl,” said Kim Stevenson, vice president of IBM eServer marketing operations in a prepared statement, “Linux on eServer iSeries takes advantage of the strengths of Linux and OS/400 and provides an easy-to-manage server consolidation solution for midsize businesses looking to drive down cost and complexity.”

SuSE Linux Developer’s Edition comes with a complete SuSE Linux 7.1 for PowerPC and SuSE Linux 7.1 for iSeries, as well as SuSE Linux 7.2 Professional for IA32.

The iSeries CD comes with a Linux operating system based on Kernel 2.4.3 and IBM Java Developer Kit for Linux (certified for SuSE Linux 7.1 for IBM eServer iSeries). Other features include a logical volume manager, a 5250 terminal emulation for connecting to OS/400, and VNC support for remote access from other platforms.
