Vapor IO Advances Efforts to Build Kinetic Edge Platform

Vapor IO announced a new round of funding on Sept. 5 that will be used to help advance the company's Kinetic Edge colocation services and edge data center server technologies.

Vapor IO has chosen not to publicly disclose the terms or the amount of funds raised as part of the Series C. The funding round wasKinetic Edge

led by Berkshire Partners, which typically invests in the $100 to $200 million range.

The company first emerged from stealth back in March 2015, with a new data center server system called the Vapor Chamber. The original idea with that technology was to enable a new type of edge computing paradigm that Vapor IO is now doubling down on with its new Kinetic Edge platform.

"As the concept of edge computing has gone from niche technology to mainstream trend, we have methodically laid the foundation for infrastructure-side edge computing," Cole Crawford, founder and CEO of Vapor IO, wrote in statement. "Vapor IO is building the largest footprint of interconnected edge data centers and we are rolling out at an accelerated pace."

Kinetic Edge

What the Kinetic Edge enables is a way for operators to deploy servers in edge locations that are connected to existing 4G LTE wireless and, in the future, 5G wireless. A Kinetic Edge data center can be thought of as a micro data center.

"By deploying a nationwide network of edge data centers as close as possible to the wireless base stations, Vapor IO is bringing the power of the cloud to the network edge to make edge-native applications such as AR/VR and high-performance autonomous vehicles not just possible, but practical, for millions of users," Thomas Latiolais, director of product and UX at Vapor IO, wrote in a blog post.

The Kinetic Edge bundle includes edge colocation in locations across the US. Currently, Vapor IO has deployed several Kinetic Edge micro data centers in Chicago and expects to have 13 sites by the end of the year. The plan is to have over 100 sites by the end of 2020, providing a national footprint.

The various sites benefit from high-speed interconnection as well as Software-Defined Networking (SDN). The SDN capabilities are provided in part by the Vapor Edge Portal that enables users to configure virtual private networks.
