Fujitsu Adds Opteron Blades, Rack Server

Fujitsu Adds Opteron Blades, Rack Server

Following the lead of its Fujitsu Siemens counterpart, the North American Fujitsu Computer Systems Tuesday announced its first Opteron endeavor. Dual-core AMD Opteron processors will power the Primergy BX630 blade server and the Primergy RX220 rack server.

Fujitsu is the latest vendor to board the Opteron bus, announcing Opteron blade and rackmount servers.

The BX630 blade servers can be installed in the current BX600 chassis and alongside the Xeon-based BX620 S2 or BX660 blades and be clustered with them, if desired.

Customers that opt for a pure Opteron chassis, however, will be able to take advantage of scalability capabilities unique to the BX630s. Using the new HyperTransport interconnect, they can link together a pair of 2-way BX630 server blades into a single, 4-processor server blade with the performance of a native 4-way server. The blades will be tightly coupled via 2-way SNMP, Richard McCormack, senior vice president of product and solutions marketing at Fujitsu Computer Systems, told ServerWatch. The configuration can support up to four processors or, in a dual-core environment, eight processor cores.

The RX220 is rack-optimized 1U server. It is positioned for high-performance computing environments, as it leverages the Opteron processor's floating point performance. The RX220 is fully integrated with the Primergy Management Suite.

The BX630 server is scheduled to begin shipping in mid-November and will be priced starting at $2,350. The RX220 server will be available in December and will start at $1,700.
