IBM, VMware Partner on xSeries Virtualization
Enterprises that purchase the offering will have the option of deploying single or multiple applications or services within a VMware virtual machine running on an IBM eServer xSeries server in a secure hosting environment.VMware revealed Tuesday that IBM had selected VMware ESX Server as the virtualization platform for its new Virtual eServer xSeries Managed Hosted offering.
Like other on-demand initiatives, this arrangement is structured so that customers pay only for the computing power and capacity they require.
This announcement comes on the heels of IBM making public its plans for utility computing offerings with new on-demand services across all four of its server lines, including xSeries.
Together IBM and VMware will provide Virtual eServer xSeries customers with a secure, scalable, virtualized server platform for deploying Microsoft Windows-based applications or services.
IBM will supply and manage the physical server and the infrastructure that makes up the virtual server environment, while VMware will oversee the virtualization aspect.
VMware ESX Server is used to implement a customer's virtual environment. In a hosting environment, customers share the infrastructure, and each virtual environment is isolated and independent of other virtual environments.
"The combination of IBM eServer xSeries performance and manageability with VMware ESX Server has been a winning combination for thousands of our joint customers," said Diane Greene, president and CEO, VMware. "Now, we're pleased to team with IBM once more to bring cost-effective flexible computing to IBM's eServer xSeries Managed Hosting customers."
