HP Sets New Java Benchmark Record

HP Sets New Java Benchmark Record

Hewlett-Packard this week announced it had set a new record for the SPECjbb2000 benchmark, a measurement that evaluates the performance of servers running typical Java business applications.

HP this week revealed it has set a new record for the SPECjbb2000 benchmark, a measurement that evaluates the performance of servers running typical Java business applications.

HP unintentionally broke the record previously set with IBM's Power4 processor when testing a simulated Java environment on an HP rx5670 server with an Itanium 2 (AKA Madison) processor, Brian Cox, worldwide product line manager for HP servers told ServerWatch.

The Itanium 2 processors are due out later this summer, and Cox said that by calendar year end HP will have a spectrum of servers, from 2-processor to 64-processor, running the Itanium 2 processor.

HP's new world record benchmark result is 116,466 operations per second on the Standard Performance Evaluation Corp's SPECjbb2000 benchmark. This is 20 percent higher than the previous record of 96,377 set by IBM's Power4 1.7GHz.

HP further noted that in addition to setting a new record, this is also the first time a 4-way server has exceeded the 100,000 operations per second mark.

According to Cox, the rx5670 with the new processor also delivered high benchmarks in simulated database and ERP environments. In addition, the HP Superdome server set a new record for TPC-C performance, price/performance, and scalability when implemented with Microsoft Windows Server 2003 on the Itanium 2 processor.
