In an attempt to fend off competition on multiple fronts, Sun Microsystems is hoping to fortify its position by giving away its applications server software for free. Sun Microsystems to offer its application server software at no charge to keep themselves in the Web services running.

With the so-called Web Services approach increasingly used in software integration, the application server (define) has become a key part of Sun's vision for the future of computing. The application server software sits above the operating system, running custom applications that bridges data with other applications.

The Sun ONE Platform Edition will be fully integrated with Sun's Solaris9, and will also be available free of license fees as a download for Linux, Windows, HP-UX and AIX platforms. However, support will be available for a fee.
