Virtuozzo Gets a Virtual Boost
"These test results show Virtuozzo improves the high-end performance of Internet applications on Intel-based servers," said Craig Oda, vice president of business development for SWsoft.SWsoft announced its latest testing results for Virtuozzo 2.1 on Thursday. The software tool that enables organizations to create multiple virtual servers using one box has set a new benchmark in enterprise-class Linux performance by supporting more than 2,000 instances of the operating system on a Dell 8450 PowerEdge server running RedHat Linux 7.2.
Currently available for beta download, Virtuozzo 2.1 is scheduled to officially launch in the second quarter of this year.
Key new features in Virtuozzo 2.1 are VZMC (a fully GUI-based management tool), support for up to 64 GB of physical memory, name-based hosting, security enhancements, and improved service-level management functionality (e.g., advanced bandwidth management, improved bandwidth accounting, and smart migration of VEs). Virtuozzo 2.1 also includes a Web accelerator that uses the latest Linux kernel features.
"In a down economy where cost savings are paramount, issues such as server consolidation and increased performance of the data center have never been so important. Virtuozzo is intelligent technology that provides an affordable way to manage resources and information in the data center and maximize hardware performance," Oda said.
SWsoft describes the technology behind Virtuozzo as "mainframe-inspired Linux functionality" that puts "high scalability, quality of service guarantees, and increased security, within the reach of tens of thousands of small to midsize business, enterprises, and hosting providers."
SWsoft has two target customers for Virtuozzo: user enterprises looking to consolidate their servers, and service providers seeking a tool to better manage resources and customers across a network while offering a wide range of service plans and value-added services in an afforable manner.
Virtuozzo is priced starting at $250 (without installation). A complete solution with Dell 8450 hardware, software, operating system, and implementation scalable to 2,000 Linux instances starts at $25,000.
