Hewlett-Packard Monday expanded its Intel-based server offerings for small and midsize enterprises with the unveiling of the HP Server tc2100.

Available in North America and Europe starting this Friday, the tc2100 aims to offer maximum productivity and efficiency yet require minimal cost and effort.

Hewlett-Packard Monday expanded its Intel-based server offerings for small and midsize enterprises with the unveiling of the HP Server tc2100.

"There is more and more pressure on SMB [small and midsize business] customers to support their businesses with robust IT solutions that can be easily deployed and operated without draining limited resources and budget," said Jean-Jacques Ozil, worldwide marketing manager, HP Network Server Division.

"With the introduction of the HP Server tc2100, HP continues to define its leadership in this market with innovative, inexpensive products that provide superb reliability requiring a minimal amount of IT support," Ozil added.

HP designed the tc2100 specifically for organizations that have few, if any, dedicated IS staff members. To keep the installation and configuration process as simple as possible, the server offers toolless entry, front-end access, easy mounting, and an installation CD.

HP offers two set-up options for the tc2100: The system can be configured with an Intel Pentium III/512, 1.13 GHz processor with either SCSI or IDE hard disk drives, or it can have an Intel Celeron 950 MHz processor with IDE hard disk drives.

The tc2100 also features registered ECC SDRAM memory -- expandable to 1.5 GB, four open PCI I/O expansion slots, and multi-operating-system support for Windows 2000, Linux, and NetWare.

The server is also small enough to fit under a desk, a boon for any space-constrained organization.

The tc2100 is expected to be available February 1. Pricing starts at $649 for the Celeron 950 MHz model with a 40 GB IDE hard drive.
