SAP AG (SAP) and IBM Corp. (IBM) today announced the immediate general availability of the SAP Application Server functions on IBM's S/390 Enterprise Server. SAP and IBM Release S/390 SAP Application Server
The SAP Application Server solution will join the current SAP Database Server solution to meet the needs of large enterprise customers. In response to market requirements for architectural flexibility, SAP and IBM have designed the SAP Application Server to work side by side with other Application Server platforms. This flexibility is designed to enable customers to exploit the S/390's high availability, reliability, scalability, and performance while enjoying a low total cost of ownership. The SAP Application Server functionality will soon be available for other mySAP.com solutions as well. The existing Lotus Domino, MQ Series, and Visual Age Java SAP Connectors will also be available for the SAP Application Server on S/390.
"We have listened to our customers and answered their requirements for providing the SAP Application Server on the S/390 platform," said Karl-Heinz Hess, a member of the SAP Extended Executive Board for System Technology Development. "Enterprises that now employ SAP R/3 on S/390 will experience the benefit of a smooth transition from a conventional ERP backbone to Web-based e-business processes with mySAP.com."
The SAP Application Server takes advantage of S/390's e-business strengths to benefit customer workloads such as batch services; database update services; message, enqueue, and print spool services; and installation, maintenance, and upgrade utility services. Other applications that may benefit are those that require a tight integration with the customer's already-installed S/390 application portfolio.
"This new SAP solution will allow our customers to further exploit e-business opportunities by taking advantage of the S/390's tradition of high availability for mission-critical applications," said Tom Rosamilia, vice president, IBM S/390 Software Development, Enterprise Servers.
