VANCOUVER, BC – No surprise here, Red Hat, a leading contributor and OpenStack vendor, is seeing strong demand for OpenStack cloud technology. Red Hat released a new study and detailed a new cloud offering today at the OpenStack Summit.

The Red Hat-sponsored OpenStack enterprise adoption survey had 310 respondents and found that 75 percent are planning on using OpenStack.OpenStackAnd OpenStack isn’t just being used for new workloads, as the study found that 52 percent of respondents are planning on leveraging OpenStack for existing virtualized workloads.

As other user studies published by the OpenStack Foundation in the last several years have identified, KVM is the primarily hypervisor used in OpenStack at 75 percent.

In second place is VMware vSphere ESXi at 64 percent, and surprisingly 18 percent are using Microsoft’s Hyper-V. Only 13 percent are running Xen.

From a deployment perspective, organizations are looking to OpenStack to reduce operation costs, which was cited as a key use by 52 percent of respondents.

It’s not all smooth sailing for OpenStack, though, as there are some challenges that the Red Hat study found. 43 percent identified a lack of maturity in OpenStack as being an issue while 45 percent mentioned a lack of internal IT skills as being a challenge.

Red Hat also asked respondents about Platform-as-a-Service (PaaS) and containers. 54 percent have OpenStack PaaS plans and 42 percent have OpenStack container plans.

The combination of PaaS and containers is a very sweet spot for Red Hat, which is now in the final phases of development for its OpenShift 3 PaaS, a container-based Platform-as-a-Service.

New Red Hat Cloud Suite Announced

Going a step further, Red Hat today announced its Red Hat Cloud Suite bundle, which combines multiple Red Hat products together in a new offering.

Red Hat product manager James Labocki explained to ServerWatch that the Red Hat Cloud Suite is essentially a superset of the Red Hat Cloud Infrastructure offering that Red Hat has had in market since 2014. RHCI bundles Red Hat Enterprise Virtualization (RHEV) with the Red Hat Enterprise Linux OpenStack Platform (RHELOSP).

With its Cloud Suite, Red Hat is bundling OpenShift, RHELOSP and hybrid cloud management with CloudForms.
