I want to take a step back
and describe some of the simpler features offered by Windows 2000 that you might
not know about.  There have been some very serious improvements in the
usage and flow of information for the common user.  I am going to write a
series of articles which will review a few of these that I think are
significant.  If you have any other featured improvements, please feel free
to send them to me at Christopher Rice and I
will publish them here.

I want to take a step back and describe some of the simpler features offered by Windows 2000 that you might not know about. There have been some very serious improvements in the usage and flow of information for the common user. I am going to write a series of articles which will review a few of these that I think are significant.

1.  Make Available Off Line

– Windows 2000 has got laptop users in mind more than the NT operating system
did.  If you go into the My Computer icon and drop down the tools list, you
will find Folder Options.  Once you select The Folder Option, you must
select the Offline Files tab and in this field you will be able to set your
preferences.  These preferences allow you to enable this feature, set
synchronization, enable reminders, and limit the amount of temporary disk space
that you want to allocate for this function.

  This feature is very nice
for someone who wants to do a lot of work on the move, but may not have the
mental capacity to remember to sync up the documents.  Just kidding.

  Nobody wants to worry about
this process.  What if you have worked on ten different documents while you
were off-line.  You don’t want to have to remember to copy all of these
onto the network, this will alleviate that need.

2.  Telnet abilities –
With Windows 2000, there is the ability for Telnet for most all users in your
environment.

If you want to see what is going on on
your machine (i.e. – who is telnetting in), Go to your administrative tools in
the control panel adn click into Telnet Server Administration.  Here you
will have the ability to view who is accessing your machine, kick them off, edit
the registry, or stop and start services.

This tool is very handy for
simple administration when you don’t want to have to use some remote control
tools for administration.  We all know how handy the Remote Control is with
SMS….

  Well, I’ll have another one
for you soon, keep an eye out.
