IBM Thursday announced a new Intel-based eServer in the xSeries line targeted at small and midsize enterprises.

According to Big Blue, the eServer x205 is designed to exceed the performance-level needs of small to midsize enterprises, as it includes a variety of features previously unavailable to enterprises looking for a server in the lower-priced bracket.

The Pentium-4-based server supports either Linux or Windows, as well as additional operating systems. It also offers hot swap hard disk drive models and band remote manageability through support for IBM Remote Supervisor Adapter (RSA), which provides complete system control. (RSA is critical to small businesses and large enterprises with offices in multiple locations that typically do not have on-site IT staff to manage their assets or have few alternatives but to remotely manage their servers.)

Also key to the x205 is that it integrates IBM’s Project eLiza technologies (i.e., self-healing technologies) to enhance performance and availability. It also includes IBM Director, an intelligent system management program containing eLiza technology.

The eServer x205 will be available starting August 30, 2002 through resellers and
directly from IBM’s Web site or by calling +1 888 SHOP IBM. It will be priced starting at $1,049, with upgrade packages available.
