Buying that first server isn't easy. If you buy one that is too small, you will rapidly run out of room. At the opposite end of the spectrum, it is possible to spend way too much for your needs. Accordingly, Dell offers a "first server" program to help new buyers navigate their first server purchase with ease.
The Dell First Server program consists of three options that can cope with the bulk of user needs. These encompass hardware, software and support services. Users can select from a range of memory, hard drive and processor specs, and add or subtract the software they require and decide whether they want help from Dell in terms of basic or professional 24/7 support.
The entry-level version is known as Dell First Server Solution. It houses the Intel Xeon E3-1220 3.10 GHz processor, 8 GB of memory, two hard drives for 1 TB of capacity, Microsoft Small Business Server 2011 and a one-year warranty. This should be more than plenty for the average first-time server buyer. Having the software already installed is also a big plus, as Microsoft Small Business Server 2011 encompasses the bulk of software needs for small businesses.
An Enhanced First Server Solution is also available with slightly improved specs, such as the Xeon X3430 processor, and a better warranty. Finally, for those with more demanding needs, a Premium Server Solution has a Xeon E5620 processor, two hard drives (500GB, 7.2K RPM SATA 3.5") and a three-year warranty. Between these three models, Dell is confident it can meet the needs of most first-time server buyers.
