All you need to know about Disk Duplication installation methods for test 70-210 If you need to install Windows 2000 Professional on multiple machines that have identical hardware configurations, you'll want to use disk duplication.  Disk duplication (think disk cloning) allows an administrator to painlessly install many machines quickly.

If you need to install Windows 2000 Professional on multiple machines that have identical hardware configurations, you'll want to use disk duplication.  Disk duplication (think disk cloning) allows an administrator to painlessly install many machines quickly.  There are limitations however, and guidelines that you'll have to become familiar with when answering questions of this type on the exam.

Things to remember:

  • The computers must have identical hardware configurations with the exception of plug and play devices

  • In disk duplication the entire partition is "cloned" to the target computer

  • DD only works for clean installations, not upgrades

  • Sysprep.exe is used to prepare the source (master) computer for cloning.  The distribution of this image is not handled by sysprep.exe but by a third party distribution utility

  • You can find the sysprep.exe utility on the Professional CD-Rom under \Support\Tools\Deploy.cab.

  • You'll have to be an administrator to use the sysprep utility.

  • Sysprep.inf is an answer file that must be used to automate installations, and this file must be stored in the %Systemroot%sysprep folder.

  • Sysprep.exe /nosidgen is the way to run sysprep.exe without generating a security ID

Whew!
