The Security Space Web Server Survey is a survey of Web server software usage on the Internet broken down by 86 domains. Security Space estimates that nearly 90 percent of all Web sites are "orphans" to which no other sites link. Its Web server survey therefore counts only those servers referenced on other sites.
More than 20.7 million Web sites responded to the December 2004 survey, an increase from November's peak of nearly 18.9 million sites.
More than 9.24 million of Security Space sites surveyed, or 44.58 percent, had .com domains. Once again this is a lower percentage than the previous month despite an increase in the actual number of .com sites. In December, the number of worldwide WebSTAR deployments exceeded the number of Zeus deployments, with 129,369 and 115,698 servers, respectively.
