August 2004 Security Space Survey Results

The Security Space Web Server Survey is a survey of Web server software usage on the Internet broken down by 86 domains. Security Space estimates that nearly 90 percent of all Web sites are "orphans" to which no other sites link. Its Web server survey therefore counts only those servers referenced on other sites.

Nearly 15.3 million Web sites responded to the August 2004 survey, an increase from July's peak of about 14.98 million sites.

More than 7.36 million of Security Space sites, or 48.11 percent, had .com domains. Once again this is a lower percentage than the previous month despite an increase in the actual number of .com sites. August was also the first time that the number of sites with .de domains exceeded the number of sites with .net domains.
