July 2005 Netcraft Survey Highlights
The Netcraft Web Server Survey is a survey of Web server software usage on the Internet. Netcraft received responses to its July 2005 survey from 67,571,581 sites. This is nearly 2.8 million more sites than responded in June.
July is the 30th consecutive month of growth for the Web and the second-largest monthly increase in the survey history. The largest gain, of 3.3 million, occurred in March 2003, and kicked off a subsequent two-and-half years of growth.
Netcraft attributes the spike to an increased Web presence from the SMB space, the blog explosion, a growing speculation market for domain names, and strong online ad sales.
Although July brought yet another peak in the number of responses received, the top-four players, Apache, Microsoft (which includes Microsoft-Internet-Information-Server, Microsoft-IIS, Microsoft-IIS-W, Microsoft-PWS-95, and Microsoft-PWS), Sun (which includes SunONE, iPlanet-Enterprise, Netscape-Enterprise, Netscape-FastTrack, Netscape-Commerce, Netscape-Communications, Netsite-Commerce, and Netsite-Communications), and Zeus essentially remained flat, seeing growth of -0.10 percent, 0.27 percent, -0.12 percent, and 0.00, percent, respectively.
Collectively, they account for 93.72 percent of all sites counted.
Of the sites surveyed, 34,325,799, or 50.8 percent, had .com domains; 3,886,705, or about 5.75 percent, had .uk domains.
