January Netcraft Survey Shows Continued Growth
By ServerWatch Staff

The January 2007 Netcraft survey produced no surprising results. The research firm received responses from 106,875,138 sites, an increase of 1.63 million from December's survey and an increase of 8,942,691 over October 2006's 97,932,447 responses.

The number of sites measured surpassed the 100 million mark set in November 2006 and set yet another record.

Netcraft credits Microsoft, Go Daddy and Google with fueling the growth. In December, more than 650,000 hostnames were added to Microsoft's Windows Live Spaces blog service. Go Daddy and Google added 165,000 and 105,000 sites, respectively, in December.

When broken down in terms of Web server software, Windows-powered sites grew the most in market share, gaining a whopping 0.11 percent. Apache declined 0.47 percent. While Microsoft server sites (i.e., sites running Microsoft-Internet-Information-Server, Microsoft-IIS, Microsoft-IIS-W, Microsoft-PWS-95, and Microsoft-PWS) added 620,000 hostnames, giving it a total of 32,898,421 sites, Apache gained 492,000 more sites for a total of 64,312,083 sites.

In terms of raw market share, Apache remains in the top spot with 60.17 percent. Microsoft was again runner up with 30.78 percent.

Rounding out the Top Four are, as usual, Sun and Zeus, with 1.64 percent and 0.52 percent share, respectively.

Sun (i.e., sites running SunONE, iPlanet-Enterprise, Netscape-Enterprise, Netscape-FastTrack, Netscape-Commerce, Netscape-Communications, Netsite-Commerce & Netsite-Communications) jumped from 332,113 in the October survey to 1,763,847 in the January one, with the largest leap occurring in the November survey.

Netcraft did not offer an explanation for the increase.

The number of Zeus-powered sites increased from 522,311 in October to 551,767 for January.

Active sites (i.e., hostnames that contain content and thus more accurately represent developed Web sites, according to Netcraft) portrayed a slightly different picture. Here, Microsoft claimed an increase in share of 0.88 percent bringing its total to 34.52 percent. In contrast, Apache installs declined -1.08 to 58.53 percent. Sun and Zeus had less than a 0.5 percent share each with minimal change.
