Two years ago, IBM embarked on a bold new endeavor, starting the movement to create the OpenPower Foundation in a bid to spur innovation and deployment of the Power server systems architecture. According to Doug Balog, General Manager of Power Systems within IBM's System and Technology Group, it's a gamble that is paying off.

In a video interview, Balog details the progress made so far in the OpenPower Foundation. Doug Balog - IBM POWER

"It's unbelievable," Balog said. "We have seen huge wins in the market around High-Performance Computing (HPC), with the U.S. Department of Energy selecting OpenPower to accelerate the next generation of supercomputers."

Balog added that vendors have shown up at the OpenStack Foundation summit event with up to 15 motherboards designed to serve the hyperscale cloud market.

"The thing about open foundations and open platforms is you're never quite sure where they're going to go, but this one is moving incredibly fast and we're excited about the direction it's taking," Balog said.
