nDaemon was initially designed to be the news server counterpart to the popular MDaemon mail server from Alt-N Software. But unlike its sibling, nDaemon has been discontinued and is no longer being supported or developed. There is a possibility that the server will be re-released as user-supported freeware in the future, but for now nDaemon is more of a ‘use at your own risk’ type of server. Help documentation is also minimal, so don’t expect to benefit from much assistance when trying to get up and running with nDaemon. The server is relatively easy to install and configure even with the lack of support and extensive documentation, but if you haven’t had much experience setting up servers (especially news servers), you’ll probably want to consider one of the other news server alternatives.

Like other news servers, nDaemon is designed to provide USENET news to your entire organization. The server is best suited for use on local networks in a dual Internet/intranet news role. The nDaemon administrator can specify which newsgroups will be made available to users and can even create internal local news and discussion groups. nDaemon will also function as a standalone news server for individuals connecting to the ‘net via dial-up connections. nDaemon lacks the power and functionality to serve larger enterprises, so outside of small organizations and individual environments nDaemon is of limited use.

The server will run on both Windows 95 and Windows NT and can be run as a system service under NT. nDaemon is compatible with WinGate and other proxy servers for serving news through a firewall. Additional features include a built-in scheduler for downloading newsgroups and posting messages, support for multiple connection types, selective access to users based on their IP addresses, automated dial-up capabilities, and support for all major NNTP newsreaders like Agent, Outlook Express, and Netscape News. If you feel comfortable navigating uncharted waters, you might want to give nDaemon a look; otherwise, you’ll probably be better off steering clear of nDaemon and instead sailing for the more peaceful waters of DNEWS or another news server.
