OpenStack Building a Developer Story for Mitaka

OpenStack is finding its way into carriers and enterprise deployments around the world, but what about developers? At the recent OpenStack Summit in Tokyo, Japan, developers gathered to discuss the Mitaka release of OpenStack, set to debut in 2016. One of the themes that is emerging in OpenStack is the idea of focusing on a developer story, according to Mirantis co-founder Boris Renski.

Mirantis is one of the largest contributors to OpenStack and has raised $200 million in equity to help fuel its efforts. Mirantis co-founder Boris Renski also sits on the OpenStack Foundation Board of Directors, giving him particular insight into the open-source cloud project.

"OpenStack historically has been very focused on the operator community and in my opinion focusing on that community makes OpenStack a 'me-too' with VMware and Amazon," Renski said. "As OpenStack matures, it needs to become its' own thing, it can't just be an open-source version of Amazon."

Renski's view is that OpenStack needs to piggyback on a disruptive wave such as the new approach to building distributed applications using containers and orchestration. The OpenStack Magnum project, which brings container orchestration and management capabilities to OpenStack, is one step in that direction."The ideal scenario would be if the Docker community got closer to OpenStack, if Docker was to join OpenStack, for instance" Renski said.
