NetApp has unveiled its latest product integration with VMware for simplifying and accelerating the deployment of software-defined storage (SDS) in software-defined data centers (SDDC) and cloud environments.

The company's clustered Data ONTAP software now offers integration with VMware vCloud Suite and VMware Horizon Suite to enable non-disruptive migration of data for hundreds of virtual machines at a time.

Software-Defined Storage The latest development extends NetApp integrations for VMware products, including vSphere, VMware Horizon Suite, VMware vCenter Server, VMware vCloud Automation Center, and VMware vCenter Log Insight.

With the partnership, the companies continue their goal of transforming "the way IT is delivered through products and solutions such as NetApp's clustered Data ONTAP with VMware vCloud Suite and VMware Horizon Suite that provide automation, flexibility and efficiency," said Sanjay Katyal, Vice President, Global Alliances and OEMs, VMware.

While software-defined storage (SDS) still lacks an industry-accepted definition at this point, it reflects the cumulative efforts of companies like NetApp and VMware, as well as companies like EMC, HP and Nexenta, to categorize a data management and data services delivery model strategy for today's increasingly software-controlled world of IT.

The companies promote their lineup of integrated SDS solutions as playing a key role in helping enterprises realize cost efficiency and greater dynamic deployment and control over IT infrastructures, particularly as these infrastructures are more and more frequently moving to software-controlled environments where hardware resources are programmatically pooled and abstracted on an as-needed basis.

Brendon Howe, Vice President, Product & Solutions Marketing, NetApp, stated, "NetApp and VMware will continue to align our development efforts to help organizations and CIOs realize the agility of the cloud and the power of clustered Data ONTAP and its integration to VMware vCloud Suite to focus on IT server delivery versus hardware limits."

NetApp is showcasing the new technology at this week's VMworld 2013 in San Francisco, where all things software-defined marketing can be expected to take center stage.
